Sprint 2: Prototyping (2nd out of 34 submissions)
Submission Format and Requirements
The goal of the prototyping sprint was to submit some combination of the following:
- Graybox (or whitebox): blocked out level built with primitives, gives a sense of the space and flow of the level, where will objectives and obstacles be? How will the player navigate the space? How do you portray your gameplay mechanics in the space of your world?
- Beautiful Corner: showcase the art and sound, but no playable experience necessary (maybe have a camera that can move around to view 3D models from different angles or get a sense of 3D sound effects)
- Minimum Viable Product (MVP): core functionality in a somewhat fleshed out playable space (should give a clear meaningful representation of what the gameplay will be, what actions the player can take, how can they win or lose, etc.)
Prototype
We submitted a proof-of-concept of the mechanics of a hidden object game. Unfortunately, due to some unforseen scheduling conflicts with some of the artists on the team, we were unable to include art drawn by the artists in the prototype. Instead, we used a sketch of the environment (that I had drawn as a reference for the artists) as a placeholder background. This prototype was programmed entirely by me, and all of the UI and assets were implemented by me as well.
Narrative Change
Soon after we submitted to sprint 1, we changed the direction of the narrative slightly. Rather than having an overarching storyline over multiple levels (which could be catastrophic if we ran out of time to create all of the levels), we pivoted into each scene having its own contained story.
